A New Addition to the REPLAY™ Family

Your tech is changing.

Gadgets today may look and feel familiar. But under the surface, a meaningful design shift is taking place. We’re not talking about feature upgrades or fresh color options. It’s something more fundamental.

Apple is now making iPhones, iPads and MacBooks with recycled materials. Google is following suit with its latest Pixel and Nest products. Even leading third party accessory makers are scrambling to transition to more sustainable materials.

The number of new products born from existing waste is growing quickly. We couldn’t be happier.

Since 2018, we embraced this design approach for everything. In 2020, we introduced REPLAY™ to establish a new standard for personal tech manufacturing. If you see a Nimble product is “Made from REPLAY,” you know it’s both built with certified recycled waste, and tested to meet the highest global standards for safety and reliability.

For our latest APOLLO™ Series of wireless chargers, we’ve added yet another REPLAY material to the arsenal: Recycled Silicone.

WHAT IS SILICONE?

Silicone is like a hybrid between rubber and plastic polymers. It’s derived from silica, which is found in sand. Yet it’s backbone is made of silicon, oxygen and hydrocarbons. While this gives it all the functional benefits of common carbon-based plastic, the same type of chemicals are not present, making it less toxic to humans.

In comparison to plastic, silicone is more durable, flexible, crack-resistant, heat-resistant, UV light-resistant, washable, and can be shaped into virtually anything.

However, because of its high durability, silicone doesn’t easily biodegrade or decompose. Of course, this helps avoid the inevitable breakdown into microplastics known to harm land and marine life, but it also means more space is taken up in landfills.

For this reason, recycling silicone is more important than ever. For every ton of silicone recycled, upwards of 30 cubic yards of landfill space is saved.

RECYCLABILITY OF SILICONE

Truthfully, the silicone recycling process is challenging, but it can be done. Beyond space-saving landfill benefits, recycling one ton of silicone also preserves 5,774 kwh of energy (or 98 million BTUs), and 16.2 barrels of oil.

Without a doubt, choosing products made from recycled silicone is good for our ecosystem. It’s also an investment in developing the infrastructure to process it. Innovation can’t exist without demand for these materials. On top of that, you’re supporting the uptick in job creation and economic opportunity that comes along with it.

Bottom line is personal tech is improving for the better. Both for people, and our planet. But the trend can’t move forward without you.
